Welcome to the Detroit Red Wings

During the 2020 offseason, The Detroit Red Wings acquired 6’4, 214 lbs Marc Staal from The New York Rangers. The Rangers needed to dump Staal and his $5.7 million dollar cap hit to make room for their younger stars. Red Wings traded “future considerations” for Staal and a 2021 second-round pick. The Rangers sent the 2021 second-round pick to compensate the Red Wings for helping them out their cap space bind. Staal has been a member of the Rangers since he was drafted 12th overall in 2005.

    Offensive Abilities

Staal is not what one would consider an offensive defenseman. His highest point total was from the 2010-2011 season, recording seven goals and 22 assists, totaling 29 points. Staal’s highest goal-scoring season was in the 2009-2010 season totaling eight goals. One may not expect to see him stealing power play time from our younger players or putting up more than 10 to 15 points during the shortened season.

    Defensive Abilities

Aside from the second-round pick, there are other advantages of the trade. In Staal’s 13 year career he has recorded a negative plus/minus in four seasons. As a defensive defenseman, Staal will be used in a shutdown role. Throughout his career, he has averaged 96 blocks and 110 hits per season. In the shortened season, his numbers will not be expected to be as high but he adds what Detroit has been missing on defense. Staal’s experience on the penalty kill unit in New York will also switch over nicely as the Wings desperately need help killing penalties.

    Expectations for Staal

As fans, we can expect to be frustrated with Staal throughout the season. His legs are no longer there, and he is bound to lose races to the puck and puck battles against younger, faster players. What one cannot overlook is the experience he will bring to the team. Staal will be a great help to our younger core. The Wings’ biggest takeback is their lackluster defense and penalty-killing units. Adding Staal is not going to solve all the team’s problems, but one can expect to see growth in both categories this season due to Staal’s presence.
