Red Wings and Blackhawks square off for the first time in 2021

The Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks are back in the same division and take to the ice tonight in Chicago. Going into tonight’s game the Blackhawks are looking for their first win of the season. A rough stint against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers left them 0-3-1. As the Red Wings and Blackhawks series gets underway, here are the projected lineups.

    Chicago Blackhawks:

Head coach Jeremy Colliton said after morning skate on Friday that they are expecting to go with the same lineup as Tuesday’s game versus the Florida Panthers.

Alex Debrincat – Pius Suter – Patrick Kane

Dominik Kubalik – Dylan Strome – Philipp Kurashev

Mattias Janmark – Lucas Wallmark – Andrew Shaw

Brandon Hagel – David Kampf – Ryan Carpenter

    Duncan Keith – Adam Boqvist

    Nikita Zadorov – Connor Murphy

Calvin de Haan – Ian Mitchell

    Kevin Lankinen

    Collin Delia

    Detroit Red Wings:

The NHL announced that Sam Gagner and Jon Merrill will join Robby Fabbri and Adam Erne on the COVID protocol list; making them unavailable against the Blackhawks. With these players no longer available the Red Wings recalled forward Givani Smith.

Eligible to return from COVID protocol is Darren Helm and newly acquired Christian Djoos. On Saturday, January 17th Coach Jeff Blashill had said Helm will require at least two weeks to regain his physical form. “When you miss that much time, 14 days of not exercising, basically it’s going to take a little bit,” Blashill said.  So it is likely that Smith gets the call to replace Gagne on the 4th line.

Vladislav Namestnikov – Dylan Larkin – Filip Zadina

Bobby Ryan – Michael Rasmussen – Anthony Mantha

Tyler Bertuzzi – Luke Glendening – Mathias Brome

Frans Nielsen – Valtteri Filppula – Givani Smith

    Filip Hronek – Patrik Nemeth

    Danny DeKekeyser – Christian Djoos

    Marc Staal – Troy Stecher

    Thomas Greiss

    Jonathan Bernier

Through four games the Red Wings appear to be committed to a rotation in net with Thomas Greiss taking the opener for each two-game set. Greiss’s record this season is 0-2 with a 2.59 goals-against average, with 71 shots against, and has a 0.930 save percentage. Jonathan Bernier has both victories with 2.00 goals-against average, facing 55 shots, and a 0.927 save percentage.
